Course details for Engineering : Higher National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering

Is this course for you?
The course is designed for engineers or technicians who wish to acquire and develop the knowledge and intellectual skills to enable progression to incorporate status recognition by professional bodies.
What do you need to get on the course?
Entry onto an HNC or HND is based initially on 120 UCAS points or equivalent, however, prior experience in an appropriate field will also be considered. The following are the usual entry requirements onto HE Engineering programmes. Normally entrants would be 18 years old or older: • National Certificate/Diploma profile giving 120 UCAS points with merits in Mathematics and Science. Pass profile students do not cope with our HE, however students with a good reference from their current tutors approaching a merit profile and with good science and maths will be considered. • A-level (grade A or equivalent) and AS-level (2 x grade A or equivalent) students with 120 UCAS points in any appropriate subjects along with GCSEs of C and above in English Language, Mathematics and Science will be considered. • Mature students, particularly those with relevant industrial experience who can demonstrate the ability, commitment, and likely academic proficiency will be considered. Some mathematics and science qualifications will be required. • AVCE/GNVQ in an appropriate subject area; giving 120 UCAS points • students from overseas will have to provide visa entitlement and original paper qualifications, which will be subject to NARIC equivalence assessment to 120 UCAS points. (NARIC: the National Agency responsible for providing information, advice and expert opinion on vocational, academic and professional skills and qualifications from over 180 countries worldwide). All students are required to complete an unseen, no calculator allowed, entry test which should last approximately 15 minutes and they will be interviewed regarding their suitability for their chosen programme and their reasons for choosing engineering as a career. NVQ awards, as work-based qualifications, may contribute towards an applicant's entry profile but need supplementary academic qualifications and/or experiential learning to be considered for HE Engineering programmes. With the exception of Accounting at NVQ LV 3, NVQs score no UCAS points (this is not an HE Engineering dictate but taken from UCAS policy). In HE Engineering we recognise that students possessing only NVQ do not normally have the required academic capability to cope with a level 4, academic programme, as they do not have the necessary academic background, particularly in mathematics; 95% of the units taught in HE Engineering are mathematics rich and even students with the required academic entry qualifications find the programmes difficult. This applies to all HNC and HND Engineering programmes. Note only NVQ Accounting scores UCAS points.

What's the course about?
The course is a two year full-time programme, though there is a one year top-up option offered on a part-time basis to enable students holding a suitable HNC to upgrade. A total of 16 units are required, 7 core units and 9 optional units. Edexcel classify the units as either H1 or H2, with H2 units designated as being at a higher level of study. In order to satisfy the award criteria, 8 of the units studied must be designated H2. What can this course lead to?
A key progression path for Higher National Diploma learners is generally to the 2nd year of a Degree or Honours Degree programme, depending on the match of units. They also offer a progression route to professional qualifications offered by the Engineering Council UK and relevant Licensed Member organisations. The programmes provide a significant basis for progression to Incorporated Engineer level via further learning. An Engineering Higher National Diploma has currency in Industry and many vacancies are advertised as 'Higher National Diploma, Degree'. In the event of subsequent revisions, students may progress or transfer to a Foundation Degree programme. The Higher National Diploma qualifications prepare learners for a range of technical and management careers within the industry by equipping them with the necessary knowledge, understanding and skills.
