High school students from across the region will be visiting Stockport College this term, for the annual Year 10 Taster Days and Year 11 prospective students Welcome Day.
The action-packed term began last week, welcoming Year 10s from Chapel-en-le-Frith High School and Stockport School. Students attending the taster day had the opportunity to discover the diverse range of vocational subjects on offer at Stockport as well as taking part in a number of planned activities such as a motor vehicle ‘crash-course’, engineering ‘knex workshop ’, catering ‘mocktail masterclass’ and a media make-up ‘movie makeover’.
The classes are aimed at helping students make decisions about what college subjects to apply for when they start their college applications next year. Teachers from both schools were ecstatic with the activities planned for students leaving phenomenal feedback.
“Seeing normally disaffected, disinterested students totally engaged and engrossed in an activity was brilliant”
“Practicality of the plastering and plumbing sessions was great for the students and kept them engaged throughout. Relating the course to industry and earnings was beneficial”
Janet Kimber, Schools Liaison Officer at Stockport College said: “Our Taster Days are an exciting way for Year 10s to learn about the courses or careers that they are considering for their future. As well as preparing students for their imminent decisions, the tasters are designed to provide them with a better idea of what College life is really like, learning alongside current students and being taught by our enthusiastic industry professionals”.
Students from Castle Hill High School, Reddish Vale High School and Bramhall High School will be attending their Year 10 taster sessions later this term.
A separate Year 11 Welcome Day will be held on Wednesday 4th July for school leavers who have applied to join Stockport College this September. Aside from sampling a ‘real’ college timetable, students will be able to enjoy a free lunch provided by the college, experience a number of team building activities and meet their future classmates before starting their courses.
