
Stockport, twinned with Beziers in France and Heilbronn in Germany, has an estimated population of 300,000 people and is home to around 16,000 businesses. The town is ideally situated, approximately eight miles from Manchester and its many visitor attractions and just a short journey in the opposite direction is the Peak District and the beauty of the Derbyshire countryside. Manchester Airport is approximately 12 miles from the college and around an hour's drive can take you to the Lancashire Coast , the Lake District or the North Wales Coast .
Stockport has many attractions. Once famous for its hatting industry, it still houses a flourishing Hatworks Museum . Stockport is a town which is proud of its history and heritage , one of its most famous landmarks being the Viaduct, completed in December 1840 to provide a rail link between Manchester and Crewe and then onto London. The Viaduct has 26 consecutive arches, is 33 metres high and is said to consist of 11,000,000 bricks. Other attractions include the Stockport Town Hall also known as the wedding cake, an Air Raid Shelters Museum, Art Gallery and the Stockport Museum in the recently restored Vernon Park.
Just a short walk from Stockport College is the Grand Central complex, with a range of entertainments including swimming pool, clubs, gym, restaurants, bowling and cinema . There is also a wealth of pubs, cafes and restaurants in and around the Stockport area, and plenty of sports, cultural and social organisations and amateur theatres. There are plenty of walks for ramblers in the borough of Stockport, notably in Lyme Park (a deer park) and Etherow Country Park known for its many varieties of wild birds.
Also within walking distance of Stockport College is Edgeley Park, home to Stockport County and the Sale Sharks , and the Merseyway shopping centre with its excellent range and choice of shops and the famous 700 year old market which is open three days a week.
