Is this course for you?
This course is aimed at those who have completed their Higher National Certificate in Building Services Engineering and wish to further their studies.
What do you need to get on the course?
Students who have achieved a minimum of a 10 units NQF HNC in Building Services Engineering will have the required entry qualifications. Alternative qualifications will be considered for non standard entry, however this may extend the duration of the qualification.

What's the course about?
The overall aim of the programme is : 'To develop knowledge, understanding and intellectual and practical skills appropriate to a variety of roles within the building engineering services sector'. The specific aims of the Foundation Degree are: To provide a progressive and coherent route that enables students to develop the specialist skills, knowledge and understanding necessary for a range of technical, professional, managerial and supervisory roles associated with the Building Services Engineering industry. To enable student engineers to develop a range of skills, techniques, personal qualities and attitudes essential for them to make an immediate contribution to their existing or prospective employment within the Building Services Engineering sector. To provide students with the flexibility, knowledge, motivation, transferable skills and intellectual awareness to enable and encourage them to progress to further HE study and/or participate in lifelong learning and continuous professional development. To provide a programme of study and assessment strategy that recognises and builds on existing skills and experiences and develops understanding through both academic studies and practical experiences as both individuals and within project teams. Develop personal qualities including an understanding of ethical responsibilities and positive social attitudes, which are essential for success in the construction industry. To develop the active participation of employers and industry representatives in the development, planning, review and assessment of the programme. To maintain a close working relationship with Professional Bodies and the building services at large. The overall and specific aims of the programme can therefore be seen to be directly supporting the College's and the University's mission statements and contributing to the achievement of some of both institutions' strategic aims.
Is work experience a necessary part of the course?
All students on this course should be employed in the Building Services Engineering sector.
How will you be assessed?
The Foundation Degree in Building Services Engineering is designed to conform to LJMU Modular Framework Regulations. The programme uses a wide range of assessment instruments (as listed above) and as such there is no one universal set of assessment criteria. At the start of each module the students will be provided with a module handbook which will clearly specify the assessment criteria for that module. In addition all assessment briefs and instructions will clearly specify the assessment criteria for that assessment. Arrangements for the organisation and management of assessments are to be conducted by the programme leader. The students receive a comprehensive timetable of coursework submission dates at the start of their academic year, which is reinforced in the assessment briefs. The structure of the assessment plan aims to spread the student workload throughout the academic year. Project based assessments should commence at the beginning of the academic year, assignment type coursework will occur at regular intervals and the examinations occur at the end of the year after all coursework has been completed.
What qualification will you achieve?
FdSc in Building Services Engineering from Liverpool John Moores University and Stockport College.
What can this course lead to?
The FD progressing to the BSc (Hons) (engineering route) or the BEng (Hons) is designed to fulfil the academic requirements for IEng registration and ACIBSE membership grade. The FD progressing to the MEng is designed to fulfil the academic requirements for CEng registration and MCIBSE membership grade. (Students achieving BSc (Hons) and BEng (Hons) who later wish to upgrade their professional membership potential will have the opportunity to pursue an MSc in Building Services Engineering).
