Arts, Design & Media

Our courses will help you develop your talents within a hands-on environment where you will feel an important part of a creative community, not just another number. See the course pathways on the left hand side of this page.

You will work in up-to-the-minute, well-equipped studios and workshops which includea a fully functioning TV studio. You will be taught by experienced teachers who are also practising artists and designers. Students on our TV production course recently worked on a project with Jon Snow from Channel 4, and regularly crew for all independent TV companes in Manchester and the North West.Students frequently win awards in prestigious competitions such as Design & Art Direction (D&AD) Awards, Formica Awards, and MacMillans Children Book Awards.

We're well known for our great contacts with industry and you'll get the opportunity to go on work placements and take part in 'live' projects set by the industry professionals and companies who collaborate with us.

The Department has hosted special visits from top class artists and designers with an international profile, who regularly support and contribute to the courses. Some who have visited in the past year are: Paul Butler creative director for SKY Broadcasting; Mario Minichiello, the official Afghan War artist; Erica Wakerley, wallpaper prodicer; John Kippin, internationally renowned photographer; Ian Whadcock, illustrator for the successful ‘Powergen’ Electricity campaign; and Julian House, an influential graphic designer in the music industry responsible for the Primal Scream and Razorlight CD promotional material and packaging.

Many of our students have exhibited their work at major exhibitions both in Manchester and London. Our Textiles students are privileged in being one of only four courses world-wide who are permitted to exhibit their work at a major professional Trade Fair in New York. This has resulted in several of our students working as designers in prestigious New York studios.

On leaving Stockport, graduates find employment in a variety of jobs within the creative industries. They are employed as designers, freelance photographers, interior designers, television technicians and cameramen, teachers, retail buyers - the list is endless!

On graduation our Illustration students have the opportunity to join ‘Giant’, a co-operative managed by lecturers and ex-Stockport students. Through this organisation they receive commissions from major newspapers, magazines and book publishers including The Guardian, Walker Books, The Economist, Design Week, and You magazine. Visit the website on www.giantillustration.com You'll find Stockport graduates at the cutting edge of every creative job and industry in the land.
