Vocational Qualifications

Full-Time Programmes

Who are they suitable for?

National Diplomas generally relate to more specific areas of work, such as Graphic Design or Sports Science.

The minimum entry requirements for these qualifications are 4 GCSEs A*-C.

How long will they take?

A National Diploma courses take 2 years.

How are they assessed?

These courses are made up of units, each of which is separately assessed mainly through coursework although there may be some exams.

What can I do after the course?

Many successful students go on to university but some choose to enter employment.

First Diplomas

Who are they suitable for?

First Diplomas generally relate to more specific areas of work in similar subjects to National Diplomas.

The minimum entry requirements for First Diploma are 2 GCSEs at Grade D.

How long will they take? Stockport College has a popular Hair & Beauty department

These courses all take 1 year.

How are they assessed?

Mainly through coursework and practical activities.

What can I do after the course?

Many students choose to progress on to other vocational courses at a higher level. Some students prefer to find employment.

If you are thinking about going into employment you can still study at college part time.


BTEC Introductory Diplomas

Who are they suitable for?

These courses are generally either requiring GCSEs at Grade E-G or have no specific formal qualifications or requirements. They tend to give a first taste of a career path and a stepping stone to higher levels.

How long will they take?

These courses all take 1 year.

How are they assessed?

Mainly through coursework and practical activities.

What can I do after the course?

Many students have the opportunity to progress on to Level 2 vocational courses.
